Miguel Varela

Miguel teaches mediation and sociology at the University of Valladolid. He is a member of mediatEUr, where he advises the organisation on the use of technology for peacebuilding and dialogue, leading the technical work on mediatEUr’s Voices of Syria project. The project collects the views of Syrian refugees on the future of Syria and the challenges they face.

Miguel also coordinated the Dialogue Support Platform in Ukraine, a project aimed at connecting the different dialogue initiatives across the country. He accompanied the design and implementation of the build-up to a European Institute of Peace or the Evaluation of the United Nations Standby Team for Mediation Experts. Recently, he has led several research projects looking at the influence of social media in the reforms process in Ukraine and the shape of online extremism in the European Union.
He is a sociologist by the University of Salamanca, MSc in Peace and Development Work by Linneaus University, and MA in documentary photography by the University of Arts London.
