This session will focus on the analysis of what regional and international organizations do and can do in the field of mediation, how they can achieve synergy, how they can contribute to peace and mediation efforts within and beyond their regions and how they can help increase complementarity of mediation efforts. The panel will also assess capacity building and professionalization in the field of mediation. To this end, this session will bring together the representatives of four major regional/international organizations.

16.45 – 17.45    Session III: Emerging Technologies and Peace Efforts

The VIth İstanbul Mediation Conference will continue the exploration initiated last year and continued at the Ministerial meeting of the UN Group of Friends of Mediation on the margins of the 74th UN General Assembly on the role of emerging technologies in the future development of early warning, conflict analysis and conflict resolution including mediation. As the UN Digital Mediation Toolkit released in March 2019 points out, technology is already affecting the field of mediation, yet there is much to explore on how it can shape efforts in the field that are largely based on human interaction. The panel will provide thoughts on the question of how rapid developments in digital tools, involving big data and Artificial Intelligence can further support efforts on the ground.
